Israel to loosen Gaza blockade

Israel has announced new steps to loosen a land blockade of the Gaza Strip amid mounting international pressure to end the crippling three-year siege.

The administration of Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, said on Sunday that it would begin allowing all goods into the Palestinian territory other than "weapons and materials that Hamas uses".

It did not specify what it constitutes as "materials Hamas uses", but Netanyahu's office said in a statement that it would publish a list of goods not allowed into the territory "as quickly as possible".

The announcement marks a change in policy from currently providing a list of goods permitted to enter the territory.

"Israel seeks to keep out of Gaza weapons and material that Hamas uses to prepare and carry out terror and rocket attacks towards Israel and its civilians," the statement said.

"All other goods will be allowed into Gaza."
'Violating international law'

Israel also said that it will consider additional ways of allowing more Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip for medical and humanitarian reasons.

But Christopher Gunness, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), said the Israeli decision will need to be assessed by deeds and not words.

"We have to look at steps on the ground. On the ground the situation is grim - a humanitarian catastrophe in every sphere of life. So we need to get this illegal blockade lifted," he told Al Jazeera from Cairo.

"With international law, you're either violating or you're not. And this blockade is a violation.

"So if Israel wants to stop being in violation of international law it has to end the blockade, not ease it."

Increasingly isolated Israel 'liberalizes' blockade of Gaza

The blockade will continue to prevent landing by sea and the flow of arms and weaponry into the region, but the Israeli government has agreed to oversee the flow of humanitarian aid across the buffer-zone created to contain Hamas violence. Hamas has, unsurprisingly, issued statements that the “liberalization” of the blockade is insufficient, calling the food, clothing, and luxury goods that Israel has agreed to regularly ship into Gaza 'trivial and secondary'.

The agreement of the Israeli government to send in more food and supplies and to consider sending in construction materials, heretofore denied because they would enable Hamas to fortify their bases, has been met with suspicion in Europe and hostility from the Arabs. Syrian president Bashar al-Assad called the Netanyahu administration a 'pyromaniac government' and said there was no chance for peace with Israel.

The decision to lighten the blockade has not generated any positive reactions, and even strong proponent of Israel Tony Blair has begun to turn skeptical toward the Jewish State, joining US leftists in moving towards an even further isolated Israel. The general tensions in the region, however, remain largely unchanged, and despite comments from Hamas, war remains undesirable to all legitimate parties.

The Israeli military said on Monday that warplanes attacked five Hamas operatives along with weapons caches, tunnels and other targets, while Israeli gunboats fired from the sea. Some of the air strikes were called in by ground forces fighting Hamas gunmen, the military said in a statement.

Israeli officials also said Sunday that the military had been sending reserve units into Gaza since Thursday. They did not specify the number of reservists. The announcement appeared aimed at adding pressure on Hamas but it also raised the possibility of an expansion in the conflict, which began Dec. 27.

The rally filled Whitehall and the crush around the platform was so intense that I had to make my way out before the speakers had finished. Later at the Israeli embassy there were more speakers including flotilla survivors Sarah Colborne, Kevin Ovenden and Ismail Patel. Other speakers at the event included Kate Hudson, Salma Yaqoob, Daud Abdullah, Jeremy Corbyn MP, John Rose, Yvonne Ridley, Mohammed Kosbar, Lauren Booth, Keith Sonnett and Sally Hunt. Tony Benn spoke both before and after the march, as well as walking the full distance. The final speaker was George Galloway, who received an ecstatic reception, particularly from many of the Muslims in the crowd.

There was too an enormous response to Lauren Booth, who complained of the BBC coverage which had again and again broadcast the same lies from the same Israeli apologist. As a story in the morning's Guardian by Robert Booth had made clear the post-mortem findings are simply not consistent with the Israeli account but the multiple shootings in the head at close range back up the reports we heard from several of those who were there of more or less random executions by some of the boarding troops.

I was not surprised but highly disappointed to hear on the news later in the day the BBC report that 2,000 people took part in the event; my own estimate was at least 10,000 and probably rather more. This is not an isolated error - there is a consistent policy by the BBC to play down the scale of protest. Occasionally they get caught out, as in the photographers demonstration in Trafalgar Square where it was possible to actually count people in the photographs, and the BBC figure was clearly shown to be less than a fifth of the actual number present. But just why does the BBC continue to lie like this?

There were calls for international action against Israel over these and other crimes against the Palestinian people, including the closing of the Israeli embassy and the ending of their preferential trade agreement with the EU.

Several speakers compared the incident in international waters in which one US citizen, Furkan Dogan, and nine Turkish citizens - Ibrahim Bilgen, Ali HaydarBengi, Cevdet Kiliçlar, Çetin Topçuoglu, Necdet Yildirim, Fahri Yaldiz, Cengiz Songür and Cengiz Akyüz - were murdered with the massacre at Sharpeville which was a turning point in the South African freedom struggle. And many of them noted that although it was a great advance that a UK prime minister was calling for the lifting of the blockade it was only a first step.

George Galloway, speaking just before the rally due to a close with a period of silence to honour the dead announced that there would be a concerted breach of the blockade on a large scale after Ramadan ends in early September, with both a land-based convoy and a further flotilla.
